Walking my dog three times a day, I come across a lot of interesting things in the neighborhood, but lately I've become fascinated with things discarded, like birthday balloons and kids' toys. But, for the last six months or so, I've been particularly drawn to discarded pairs of shoes. It feels sad, somehow, but also fulfilling that these shoes have completed their mission and now await the next step in their journey, whether that is to be hauled off to a trash pile in the hills or to be discovered by someone who needs a new pair of shoes more than anything. Like the abandoned animals that I've cared for or helped find a home, I've come to know these pairs of shoes and often wonder about their condition and their role in the world now. I may even feel a touch of satisfaction that in their abandonment, they at least have a companion. I will continue to add photos to this collection periodically.
